Reasons For Hair Fall After Hair Transplant

In this article will highlight the reasons for hair fall after this hair transplant surgery and the necessary remedies to fix this issue permanently. ‘Will I lose hair after the hair transplantation?’ This is the most common question enquired by many candidates who would like to opt for this procedure.

The reason is there are many people who keep complaining that they continue to have hair loss even after undergoing the hair transplantation procedure. They might even doubt that the procedure has gone unsuccessful in their cases. It is time to address this issue so that people will remain informed and mentally prepared before investing.

Hair Thinning and Hair Loss Before Hair Transplantation

The hair cycle includes three stages namely the anagen, catagen, and telogen stages. The anagen phase is the active phase which lasts for about 2-6 years. Here, the hair grows one cm every 28 days. The catagen phase is the transitional phase which lasts for 2-3 weeks.

Around 3% of hairs will remain in this phase at any given time. The telogen phase is the resting phase which lasts for around 100 days. More shedding of nearly 50-100 hairs takes place in this phase. Around 6-8% of hairs will remain in this phase at any given time.

Hair Falling Out After Hair Transplant

Hair falling is a part of the hair growth cycle, where it is common to shed between 50-100 hairs per day on average. It is normal that after undergoing the hair transplantation, non-transplanted hair continues to thin and fall leaving only implanted hairs. Later, the transplanted hair follicles will be shed by creating a place for new hairs to grow.

This temporary hair loss is the outcome of the body’s method of responding to the trauma that it received during both FUT (Follicular Unit Transplantation) and FUE (Follicular Unit Extraction) procedures. Hence, this condition is referred to as ‘shock hair loss’.

The shedding of hair follicles can be noticed between 1-5 weeks after hair transplantation. Remember that this hair fall is just temporary and does not cause any permanent damage to your hair. It will take time for the new hairs to grow at different rates.

What If This Hair Loss Continues For A Prolonged Duration?

All these steps continue specifically for five months after the procedure. However, in a few cases, you may experience blotchy hair growth due to the sensitivity of pre-existing hairs to DHT (Dihydrotestosterone, a hormone causing hair loss) which are commonly visible in the temples and hairline. In that case, you should take preventive steps to put an end to your hair loss.

How To Prevent Hair Fall After Hair Transplant?

Minoxidil Drug Therapy

Minoxidil has no main direct effect on hair growth. It indirectly accelerates the vascular bed around your hair follicles to create a favorable atmosphere for hair growth.

According to the 2015 dated research evidence published in the journal named Dermatologic Therapy, hair regrows in 40 percent of patients with androgenetic hair loss after 3–6 months of minoxidil treatment [1].

DHT Blocker – Finasteride & Dutasteride

Finasteride and Dutasteride can effectively reduce hair loss problems. Moreover, dutasteride developed better hair growth than finasteride in 12 to 24 weeks, as revealed in a 2006 research article published in the Journal of the American Academy of Dermatology [2].

The reason for this difference is dutasteride can strongly block DHT (both DH1 and DH2 receptors) with a prolonged half-life compared to finasteride.

Combinational Peptide Therapy

The combination of RCP (Redensyl, Capixyl, and Procapil) can effectively promote the growth of new hair follicles as well as stop hair loss with no side effects, which is evident in the Journal of Cosmetology and Trichology, 2019[3].

Platelet Rich Plasma (PRP) Therapy

PRP therapy is one of the types of regenerative treatment that involves the injection of a patient’s own blood cells. Hence, there is no risk of allergy or infection. This natural long-lasting therapy is a non-invasive and non-surgical day-care procedure that delivers significant improvement in hair regrowth within 2-3 weeks.

A research study in the Journal of Cutaneous and Aesthetic Surgery revealed a significant reduction in hair loss between the first and fourth injections. Thus, PRP injection is the right cost-effective treatment for androgenic alopecia, with high overall patient satisfaction [4].

Cyclical Nutritional Vitamin Therapy

Vitamins like biotin (B5) and calciferol (D) are effective in promoting hair growth. Hence, physicians recommend cyclical nutritional vitamin therapy in low doses to revive hair regrowth safely and regularly by strengthening hair roots.

But never consume or stop all these medications without asking your doctor. Else, you may undergo adverse side effects.

Conclusion

It is time to stop worrying about the hair fall issue and be proactive in following the relevant steps to prevent hair fall treatment. So, stay in contact with your cosmetic surgeon regularly even after the hair transplantation procedure by conveying your hair condition without missing any details.
